Speakers at a post-rally youth dialogue said the engagement and participation of youth is essential to achieve sustainable human development for both rural and urban improvement.
Focusing on the importance of young generation, citizenship, governance and local governance and good governance sector they viewed cherished development of the country could be possible through only accelerating the voluntary movement.
To this end, more efforts are needed to raise awareness about the importance of youth civic engagement and its benefits to the individual and to society, including for sustainable development as well as resilience and wellbeing, they added. The efforts will also open up a space for young people to share their stories and ideas on civic engagement activities.
The Hunger Project Bangladesh and Department of Youth Development jointly organized the dialogue styled “Social Responsibility: Youth Civic Engagement” held at Mohanpur Upazila Parishad Hall room in the district yesterday.
PRODIGY program and British Council supported the event on the occasion of International Youth Day Celebration- 2015. The initiative has been taken to engage the students towards democratic activities through their active and effective participation for strengthening capacity of professional skills.
PRODIGY program intends to build the capacity of young people to ensure good governance in local government activities and they can lead people participation. It also works to promote civic participation and advocate the principles of integrity, accountability, transparency and inclusive at the heart of good governance.
Upazila Chairman Prof Abdus Samad and Upazila Nirbahi Officer Khandakar Yeasir Arefin addressed the discussion as chief and special guests respectively with Youth Development Officer Md Rokonuzzaman in the chair.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Khayer Uddin Mollah, BMDA Assistant Engineer Mustafizur Rahman, Upazila Cooperative Officer Mahbub Alam and Field Coordinator (Monitoring and Operation) of PRODIGY Program Subrata Kumar Paul also spoke.
The discussants stressed the need for arranging leadership training for the youths for equipping them with modern knowledge for the sake of cherished national development in future.
They viewed there is no alternative to generate community leadership from among the youths to take forward the nation successfully and that is very important to bring a qualitative change everywhere in the society.
Besides, educational institutions especially the higher seats of learning both public and private of the country should take the responsibilities of extending all requisite supports towards the students so that they are encouraged towards building themselves as worthy citizens, they added.
As Bangladesh is a disaster prone country and vulnerable to climate change, youth volunteers’ roles are an utmost need to make the people self-reliance and to face the challenges of natural disasters and other crises, the speakers noted.
