A court here on Tuesday convicted a young man of killing his grandmother in 2014 and sentenced him to death.
The convict is Mokhlesur Rahman, 26, son of Abdur Rashid of Chhengarchar MM Kandi village in Matlab Uttar upazila. He was tried in absentia.
According to the prosecution, Mokhlesur tried to take away a necklace from the neck of his grandmother Karful Begum, 75, on April 4, 2014 night while she was sleep. However, the elderly woman woke up during the act.
Later, the youth strangulated her to death and dumped the body in front of the house of one of his neighbours. He also went into hiding after the incident. Victim’s son Afazuddin filed a case against Mokhlesur the following day. Police submitted a charge-sheet against him on July 20, 2014.
