The youths, particularly the students in higher seats of learning, should be built as active citizens so that they can contribute to the society and the nation positively, speakers at a youth training session opined.
They termed the young generation as a vital power for the nation and viewed they must be built as worthy citizens through enhancing their level of confidence. Time has come to generate leadership characteristics among the youths.
They said this yesterday while addressing the inaugural session of a four-day ‘Active Citizens Youth Leadership Training (ACYLT)’ at the Postal Academy in Rajshahi. “Globally Connected, Locally Engaged” is the main theme of the programme.
The Hunger Project-Bangladesh (THPB) and British Council jointly organised the training with the goal of creating a new generation of young leaders. A total of 32 students including 16 girls from 17 departments in Rajshahi University (RU) are taking part in the course.
Chairman of Social Work Department of RU Prof Sadequl Arefin addressed the session as focal person disseminating his expertise on various youth development issues.
He mentioned that each of the youths should have commitment of building a poverty-free and self-reliant Bangladesh.
Area Coordinator of THPB Subrata Kumar Paul, Youth Mobilizer Ashiqur Rahman Sazib, Active Citizen Facilitators Kawsar Billah, Jannat Sharmin and Ali Akbar Rubel also spoke.
Subrata Paul told the session that ACYLT is a British Council program that brings together networks of youths in Bangladesh and encourages them to play a bigger role in their local communities.
Through a series of exciting and interactive sessions, the participants will share their ideas and experiences and contribute to intercultural dialogue.
The training included several individual and group presentations on social issues through which participants demonstrated their creativity and communication skills.
He said the initiative has been taken to engage the youths towards democratic activities through their active and effective participation for strengthening capacity of nation-building skills.
