Human traffickers allegedly gunned down a youth as he along with others tried to catch a gang of human traffickers, who were going to Malaysia illegally by a trawler through the Sonadia Channel under Moheskhali upazila of the district recently.
The deceased was identified as Lutu Mia, 22, son of Kamal Pasha of Purba Para under Sonadia in Moheshkhali upazila of Cox’s Bazar district.
Sources said a trawler with 15-20 people from Sonadia and other parts of the country started for Malaysia from Tajiakatar Ghat area on Wednesday night.
At the same time, some people of Sonadia area chased the trawler to them, but human traffickers opened fire at them, leaving Lutu Mia dead on the spot.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Moheshkhali police station Alamgir Hossain said police will take steps in this connection.
