Mongla port officials have rescued a youth from inside a locked shipping container that came from Chittagong port.
Doctors said the 26-year-old, Abu Taher, was badly affected by four days of starvation and insufficient oxygen.

Islam said Taher was rescued by breaking open the container on Ellen S, a general cargo ship carrying the flag of Antigua and Barbuda, around 9:30 pm on Thursday.
Port workers heard sounds coming from a container they were unloading the ship that had come from Chittagong.
“They informed me. We broke the lock to find the youth in a critical state and admitted him to the [Mongla] Port Hospital.”
The port official added that Taher was nearly unconscious and managed to reveal his identity only after being out in the open for some time. Son of Mohammad Saber of Chittagong’s Anowara, he used to work as a truck driver’s assistant.
Islam, quoting Taher, said that the youth had gone to pier 9 of the Chittagong port on Sunday. On the truck, he had an argument with the driver, who later shoved him into the container and locked it.
Doctor Prokash Chandra Mandal said, “Taher has been weakened by oxygen deprivation and for going without food for four days. He has been sedated and is under treatment.” Mongla Police SI Manjur Elahi told bdnews24.com: “We visited Abu Taher at the hospital after being informed by the port authorities.”
“We cannot say yet how he came to be locked in the container. We will question him after his recovery.”
