A young man drowned as he was pushed off a boat into the Purnabhaba river at Lalmatia ghat of Muraripur village in sadar upazila allegedly by a village doctor on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Martuza Rahman Babu, 28, son of late Wasimuddin of the village.
Quoting witnesses, police said Martuza had an altercation with village doctor Mazedur Rahman on a boat while crossing the Purnabhaba River around 9 am.
At one stage, Mazedur pushed Martuza off the boat and he went deep down into the river.
After a frantic search, local people pulled off the body of Martuza.
Police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Police arrested the village doctor Mazedur in this connection.
