Staff Reporter :
A Bangaldeshi youth allegedly left the country on February 21 to join the Islamic States (IS), a Syria-based terrorist organization.
The youth has been identified as Ashikur Rahman, 21. He is a student of the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), sources said.
Diplomatic sources said that Ashikur went to Turkish capital Istanbul to attend a conference. But he did not return to Dhaka on February 27 as scheduled, and his whereabouts could not be located since then.
Later, the Bangladesh Embassy to Turkey found that all the papers he submitted with his visa application from regarding the conference were fake.
After being contacted, his family members said that
they did not know that he had gone to Turkey. On 11 March, the Foreign Ministry sent a letter to the Home Ministry and the Detective Branches regarding this matter. Based on his actions, it seems that Ashikur left for Turkey and purposefully went missing with the intention of moving to Syria to join the IS, the letter said.
Bangladesh Embassy has requested the Turkish government to take necessary steps to capture Ashikur.
Monirul Islam, Joint-Commissioner of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), told the media that they had been informed of the case. “We are looking into the matter,” he said.
