A young man was killed and three others were injured in an attack by his rivals over a land-related dispute at Uttar Rajnagar village in Companiganj upazila on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Ilias Miah,32, son of late Abdur Rahman of the village.
Police and locals said there had been a longstanding dispute between Ilias Ali and Moyna Miah of the village over the ownership of a piece of land.
As a sequel to that, men of Ilias locked in an altercation with Moyna’ s supporters in the area when Moyna’s men went to the disputed land to take its possession at about 3:00 pm.
At one stage of altercation, both the groups equipped with lethal weapons attacked each other, leaving four people, including Ilias, seriously injured.
Ilias succumbed to his injures on way to the upazila health complex.
The injured, Ilias’ two brothers-Shafiq Miah, 45, and Rafiq Miah,35, and his niece Foysal-were admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated.
Informed, police recovered the body and sent it to the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
