BSS, Dhaka :
Speakers at a discussion meeting in the city urged the new generation to be more kind, positive and generous to the elderly people.
The life of older persons can be more meaningful and pleasant, if the youth come forward to establish their rights and overall welfare, they said on Thursday at the discussion meeting at the auditorium of Department of Social Service at Agargaon.
Department of Social Service organized the discussion meeting marking the International Day of Older Persons.
Presided over by Department of Social Service Director General Gazi Mohammad Nurul Kabir, the meeting was attended by State Minister for Public Administration Ismat Ara Sadeque as the chief guest while Secretary of Social Welfare Ministry Tariq Ul Islam and National Professor Dr. MR Khan were present as the special guests.
Ismat Ara Sadeque said the breakup of joint families at the present time is widening distance between the parents and children, which is causing harm to the elderly people.
She urged the new general to be responsible towards their elderly relatives. The state minister said old age is not a barrier. The elderly people would have to face it and proceed on maintaining mental strength, she added.
Tariq Ul Islam said the government has taken initiative to bring all ranging from children to elderly people within the social safety net.
An initiative is underway to recognize the persons above 60 years as senior citizens, he added.
