A young man named Khokon Mia (22) has committed ‘suicide’ after failing to repay a loan at Gafargaon of Mymensingh district. The incident took place at around 8:30 pm on Thursday in Paschim Para of Rouha village in Saltia union of the upazila. The deceased was identified as Khokon Mia, son of missing Sultan Mia of Rouha village.
Taiju Mia, father-in-law of the deceased, has filed an unnatural death case at Gafargaon police station. Earlier on Thursday night, the young man committed suicide.
According to police and local sources, a man named Sultan Mia of Rouha village in Saltia union of the upazila went missing many years ago. Later his wife and daughter also died. Then maternal uncle Taiju Mia brought him only son Khokon Mia to his house and brought him up.
Taiju Mia married his daughter to Khokon a year ago. Meanwhile, Khokon has borrowed a lot of money from the people of the area for some time. The income he earned was not enough to pay the interest on loans.
He could not repay the loan as his income was low. So Khokon became mentally depressed due to the pressure of the creditors and the lack of family. Later on Thursday night, he committed suicide by hanging himself with a towel around the neck of a blackberry tree in the house of his neighbor Abdul Qadir.
Gafargaon Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Anukul Sarkar said police recovered the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy on Friday. Further legal action will be taken after receiving the autopsy report of the body.
