Drug addition has taken an alarming state among the young people, particularly the students of different schools, colleges and universities, across the country. In recent years, addiction towards drugs mostly Yaba is gradually destroying the future of the youth.
Initially, it had spread among the offspring of the higher class and higher middle class of people. Now the young generation, instead of building their future, is destroying it being addicted with the poisonous drug — Yaba.
Country’s pharmacologists, psychologists and sociologists told The New Nation that the addicted young people who are taking this dangerous narcotic drug — Yaba — are in the risk of gradually losing their memories and developing inability to make any decision. Besides, some addicts are suffering from schizophrenic tendencies.
A good number of Yaba users have been facing depression following intake of the narcotic drug. Even some addicts commit crimes and some others commit suicide when they failed to manage money badly needed to buy the drug, they said.
Thus, the future productive young generation is getting derailed from their golden path and is gradually becoming a burden to their families and the society alike.
According to World Health Organisation (WHO), there are millions of drug-addicted people in Bangladesh and most of them are young and in the age group between 18 and 30. They (drug addicts) are from all strata of the society.
Bangladesh is a safe route for Yaba drug dealers because this land is being used illegally as a transit point for trafficking of Yaba. Most of the Yaba comes from neighbouring Myanmar and Laos. This drug smuggled into the country through its vast border areas, waterways and airways. A Strong Syndicate reportedly use the vast forest and terrain areas of Chittagong Hill Tracts and the Bangladeshi, Myanmar and Thai fishing trawlers for trafficking Yaba into the country.
In this situation, syndicate members are now active in border areas as well as inside the country. They have also strong network all over the country. From city to rural areas, syndicates have already established networks of yaba trading. That’s why the young generation even at rural village level can get Yaba easily.
There are about 85 private universities in Bangladesh, mostly in Dhaka city. The private universities are safe haven for Yaba traders. Many syndicates are also active in and around the campuses. As a result, a good number of private university students have become addicted.
The students take Yaba overnight in the messes near the campus of the private universities. Alarmingly, the number of female students is also becoming addicted day by day.
Suhrawardy Udyan is another safe haven for Yaba addicts. The entire Suhrawardy Udyan, stretching from the Shishu Park corner to Joykali Mandir, adjacent to the Dhaka University campus, has virtually turned into a sanctuary for drug traders and drug addicts. Buying and selling of Yaba go openly from morning to midnight, but neither Udyan authorities nor lawmen seem to have take any step against such immoral act.
Sources said, Yaba traders and their clients, mostly youngsters, throng the Udyan from different city points to take drugs, said a tea stall owner Alamgir. Several listed drug traders backed by influential quarters bring drugs in the park. Listed criminals, banking on law-enforcers’ inaction, have turned the entire Suhrawardy Udyan and its adjoining areas into a safe haven for Yaba trading.
During a spot visit to Suhrawardy Udyan on Thursday evening, this reporter found a large number of drug addicts — male and female — taking Yaba tablet.
Yaba and other drugs have also become available in public universities, including Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Chittagong University and Rajshahi University in the recent months.
Police arrested seven persons and recovered 1,250 pieces of Yaba from their possession near Mohsin Hall of Dhaka University on Monday.
Professor Abdur Rashid, former dean of Department of Pharmacy of DU said the main ingredients of Yaba are methamphetamine and caffeine. Each Yaba tablet contains 25 to 35 milligrams of methamphetamine and 45mg to 65mg caffeine.
Drugs like Yaba is dangerous, said Professor Rashid. Taking Yaba for a long time is dangerous for human health as it affects the human immune system, brain and neurology.
Thai word Yaba means crazy medicine. It was originally discovered by the Japanese to counter some debilitating diseases, he said. This is also known as Hitler’s drug. Hitler fed it to soldiers so that they can go on fighting for days together without getting tired.
