Taking advantage of the authorities’ weaker approach to deal with the growing sex offences, a fellow-worker along with his two cohorts gang-raped a sales girl of a chain superstore at Azampur in the city’s Uttara area on Thursday night. Quoting the victim, Sentu Das, assistant sub-inspector of Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp, said the victim, aged about 17, hailing from Babuganj upazila of Barisal district, used to live at her paternal uncle’s house in Uttara area. On Thursday night, her fellow-worker Arif, 25, along with his two associates took the victim to an under-construction building near Rajlaxmi Complex and raped her there by turns between 9 pm and 11 pm. Later, the victim’s brother-in-law took her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and got her admitted there around 2:30 am. Meanwhile, Rab-1 members arrested Arif from the city and police arrested his associate Babu in this connection. Assistant Deputy Commissioner Md Russell of Uttara division (DMP) said a case was filed with Uttara thana (West) in this connection. The incident was reported two months after a Garo saleswoman was gang-raped in a moving microbus while returning home from her workplace in the city triggering a widespread public outcry. A senior intelligence official told UNB that they have recorded some 100 rape incidents over the last six months till June this year, but said the actual number of such incidents to be much higher than the recorded ones. — Dhaka, July 31 (UNB)
