Yet another record in new Covid cases 11,651 fresh infections, 199 deaths

Bangladesh has registered a record 11,651 coronavirus cases in a single day, the worst surge since the pandemic begun.
Besides. 199 people died from Covid-19 in 24 hours till 8am Thursday, taking the total number of fatalities from the diseases to 15,792, said a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
At least 11,651 new infections were recorded during the period, taking the total number of people infected to 9,89,219, added the release.
Experts believe that number will climb even higher in the coming days amid a worsening pandemic situation in the country.
The soaring virus infection has also put burden on the hospitals across Bangladesh.

“Right now, no ICU beds remain vacant at seven government hospitals in the capital,” said a Health Ministry official, adding, “The hospitals in Dhaka are now facing the burden of coronavirus infected parents.”
The daily Covid-19 cases are also hitting high in capital Dhaka, with public health experts warning the surge could be deadlier than in 2020.
Dhaka logged the highest number of cases in the 24 hours to 8 am on Thursday among the eight divisions with 4,949. Khulna saw 1,732, Chattogram 1,936 and Rajshahi 1,048, while Rangpur saw 744.
Dhaka also accounted for 65 fatalities in the single day count, the most among the eight divisions in the country. Khulna was second with 55 deaths, followed by Chattogram with 37, Rajshahi with 15 and Rangpur with nine. Nationwide, another 5,987 people recovered from the illness, bringing the total number of recoveries to 850,502.
As many as 36,850 samples were tested across the country, for a positivity rate of 31.62 percent. The latest figures put the recovery rate at 86.57 percent and the mortality rate at 1.60 percent.
The overall test positivity rate stands at 14.41%.
Vaccination
On Thursday, eight people received first dose of Oxford-Astrazeneca vaccine, taking the total number to 5,820,023 while 651 others received the second dose, taking the total number to 4,293,832.
The first dose of the Sinopharm shots were administered to 8,692 people, taking the total to 103,887. As many as 2,237 people received second dose of the vaccine till Thursday.
Meanwhile, 1,752 people were administered with the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine, taking the total to 6,762.
Bangladesh reported 201 new deaths on Thursday, the biggest daily rise in fatalities since the pandemic began.
Besides, the country reported as many as 11,162 new infections on the same day.
Bangladesh reported its first Covid-19 cases in March last year. So far, five variants of the virus have been detected in Bangladesh including the Indian variant (B.1.617.2) or Delta being the latest. It was later renamed as the Delta variant.
