A female college student in Narsingdi was set on fire by unidentified miscreants at Birpur of Narsingdi Municipal town on Thursday night.
The victim has been identified as Phulon Barman, 17, daughter of Shital Barman. She passed her HSC examination last year but has not yet got himself admitted to any university or equivalent institution.
Detective Branch (DB) of police detained a suspect named Sanjib Roy, 24,
in connection with the incident.
Sanjib, son of Nani Gopal and victim’s relative was arrested from his residence in Purbopara village in Raipura upazila early on Friday.
According to the victim’s family, she was on her way home from a nearby store when two miscreants grabbed her and took her in a secluded nearby location. Then they poured kerosene on her and set her on fire and fled.
After hearing her scream, locals rescued the victim and took her to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital at first and later to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Narsingdi Superintended of Police (SP) Miraz Uddin Ahmed said that the evidence of the attack has been recovered from the scene.
Narsingdi city Outpost Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman said, “We have already spoken to the victim’s family and inspected the crime scene. It will only be possible to determine the motive behind the crime and identify the others involved in it after an investigation.
Narsingdi Sadar Hospital Dr Nasim al Islam said that around 20 percent of her body was burnt in explosive during the fire.
She was shifted to the Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital DMCH) as her condition was detouring, he said.
