Six journalists were severely beaten by a gang of Yaba peddlers when the journalists were doing their professional duty at Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar district on Friday afternoon.
The injured are Somoy TV Cox’s Bazar correspondent Sujauddin Rubel and cameraperson Abul Faraz, Independent TV correspondent Toufiqul Islam Lipu and cameraman Sharif Uddin, and Ekattur TV correspondent Quamrul Islam Mintu and cameraperson Babu Das.
The attackers also snatched cameras, microphones, money in cash and mobile phone sets.
Sujauddin said, “Local journalists went to
Nazirparha after getting information that a team of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized around 1,20,000 Yaba pills there in the afternoon. ” The moment we reached his house, yaba smugglers attacked our van and stabbed Rubel.”
The gang also beat rest of the journalists, leaving them severely injured, and snatched their cameras, mobile phones and others belongings, he said.
“A gang of people led by Nurul Haque Bhutto, a home ministry listed Yaba dealer equipped with sharp weapons, carried out the attack,” he said.
Teknaf Upzial Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shafiul Islam said that police were investigating the incident.
“Bhutto, is a top wanted yaba smuggler. There are five cases against him. He served behind the bar several times,” he said.
Cox’s Bazar Sadar Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Mazid said that the newsmen came under the attack at Nazirparha in the afternoon.
“We are trying to arrest the culprits,” the police official said.
