Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Dhaka on Friday on a 22-hour state visit to Bangladesh, the first by a Chinese head of state in 30 years.
A special flight of Air China Boeing 747-400 carrying President Xi Jinping and his entourage landed at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) at 11:36am.
After opening the plane door, Xi stepped out, waving with hand.
Earlier, he was escorted by Air Force jets in Bangladesh sky.
President Abdul Hamid received his Chinese counterpart on his arrival at the VVIP terminal of HSIA at 12.03 pm with 21-gun salute. A young child welcomed the Chinese President with flowers when he
arrived at the VVIP terminal. A red carpet was rolled out to welcome Xi Jinping. A long line of Bangladesh and Chinese dignitaries, including cabinet members, were seen waiting to greet the Chinese leader.
Xi Jinping moved to the saluting dais accompanied by his Bangladesh counterpart, and received guard of honor and inspected the guard.
President Abdul Hamid introduced the cabinet members and other dignitaries to Xi Jinping at the presentation line. The Chinese President also introduced his entourage to Abdul Hamid.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, Public Administration Minister Syed Ashraful Islam, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, Planning Minister AHM Mostafa Kamal, Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Dr Gowher Rizvi, the chiefs of the three services and State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam were present at the presentation line.
A 13-member high-profile delegation, including Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Finance Minister Lou Jiwei, Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng, Governor of the People’s Bank of China Zhou Xiaochuan, is accompanying the Chinese President.
China considers Bangladesh as an important partner in South Asia and the Indian Ocean region, President Xi Jinping said in an arrival statement at Dhaka.
“We are ready to work with the Bangladeshi side to further deepen our political mutual trust and elevate our relations and practical cooperation to a higher level of strategic partnership,” Xi said.
“In the 41 years of our diplomatic relations, China-Bangladesh ties have kept moving forward,” said the statement. The Chinese president pointed out that China and Bangladesh face similar task of development. He said that the Chinese dream to achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is “in perfect harmony” with Bangladesh’s dream of a “Sonar Bangla”.
“I look forward to having broad and in-depth exchange of views with President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and other Bangladeshi leaders on China-Bangladesh relations and issues of mutual interests to chart the course for our future cooperation and jointly usher in a new chapter in our bilateral relations,” Xi added.
From the airport, President Xi was escorted to his place of residence – Hotel Le Meridien – in a ceremonial motorcade.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the Chinese President held official talks at the Prime Minister’s Office from 3:15pm to 4:15pm.
They later witnessed the signing of 26 MoUs and agreements between the two countries.
The Chinese President signed visitors’ book there before returning to his place of residence.
Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury also met the Chinese President at Rangamati Room of the hotel at 4:35 retreat.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia called on Xi around 5:00pm at the hotel.
After the meetings, President Xi headed towards Bangabhaban and met his Bangladesh counterpart Abdul Hamid at 6:30pm.
The Chinese President attended banquet preceded by cultural programme hosted by Abdul Hamid at Darbar Hall from 7:00pm-8:30pm.
On Saturday, the Chinese President will leave hotel for National Martyrs Memorial at 8:20pm
Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Huq and the General Commanding Officer of the 9th infantry division will receive the Chinese President in Savar at 8:55am.
After attending the ceremony at the National Martyrs Memorial, the Chinese President will sign visitors’ book and plant a sapling there.
President Xi will reach the airport straight from Savar and leave for Goa, India at 10:00am on Saturday by the special VVIP flight. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will see him off at the airport.
