Terming Bangladesh China’s one of important cooperation partners, Chinese President Xi Jinping has assured Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of taking necessary measures to reduce the huge trade gap between the two countries.
In a bilateral meeting at Hotel Waldorf Astoria here on Saturday, Sheikh Hasina apprised the Chinese President of her government’s decision to give 774 acres of land in Chittagong to set up an exclusive Chinese Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim said the Chinese President highly appreciated Bangladesh’s rapid socioeconomic growth saying China considers Bangladesh as one of its important cooperation partners and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as one of their best friends.
About the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the two countries, the Chinese President said there have been many high level exchange of visits by the time and many more would be arranged in the coming days.
He said, the cooperation between the two countries can be enhanced in the areas of trade, economy, communication and education sectors, and assured of importing more jute products from Bangladesh.
Jinping highly lauded the active participation of Prime Minister Shiekh Hasina played in constructing the BCIM economic corridor in the region which can bring economic benefit for people.
Both the leaders also agreed on more representation of the two countries in UN bodies.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina hoped that the 40thanniversary of diplomatic relation between the two countries would further intensify the closer comprehensive partnership.
She thanked the Chinese President for the steps taken for some remedial and preferential measures to address the existing trade imbalance. She requested Xi Jinping to give duty-free access of more Bangladesh products to China market and relaxation of the APTA Rules of Origin.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, PM’s Adviser on International Affairs Gowher Rizvi, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shariar Alam and Dr Dipu Moni, MP were present.
Earlier, a delegation of three US Congressmen met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Hotel Waldorf Astoria.
The Congressmen are Ranking Member of US House of Foreign Affairs Committee Eliot L Engle, Co-chair of Bangladesh Caucus in the US Congress Joseph Crowley and Member of Bangladesh Caucus in US Congress Carolyn B Maloney.
The Congressmen appreciated the Prime Minister for her government’s successful role in poverty alleviation, and hailed the role and performance of Bangladesh in peacekeeping missions under her guidance.
They also appreciated the ‘zero tolerance’ policy of the Prime Minister against terrorism and violent extremism and congratulated Bangladesh for properly handling the Myanmar refuge problem.
