Christmas observed with great enthusiasm and socio-religious flavor with festive mood in Barishal city on Wednesday.
More than 20 thousand members of the three major Christian sects of the city amid tight security measures gallantly celebrated their biggest religious and socio-cultural festival from early Wednesday.
The festivities started with children fair at churches from Tuesday evening to ensure the attendances of the special ceremonies with singing carols, special church prayers, and discussion meetings.
The six Christian Churches of the city, Mother Teresa’s Home, Christian religious training center, Care, Caritas, YMCA, YWCA and other Christian Institutions have arranged different types of programs including visits and special prayers at the graveyards.
The churches and adjoining grounds decorated with colorful tiny blinking lights and illuminated Christmas trees placed with a star standing right on top.
Besides, Santa Claus handed over Christmas gifts to the children, family gatherings took place and Christmas-Day feasts.
To ensure peaceful celebrations of Christmas, security beefed up in the city.
The police and the Rapid Action Battalion personnel have been deployed to ensure safety in and around the churches and Christian populated areas.
Barishal center of Bangladesh Betar and cable operators of Barishal also aired special programs on the occasion of holy Christmas as ‘Shuva Baro Din’.
A number of organizations and individuals threw parties, featuring Christmas carols, games, dance shows and Christmas cakes in the Christian populated houses, colonies and areas of the city and district.
Besides special religious prayer, inter-religious discussion meetings, exhibition and drama on the life of the Holy Christ, cultural functions, sports, social and family gatherings, decoration of the Christian religious, socio-cultural organisations, graveyards, houses with lights, colorful balloons, paintings, were arranged on this occasion.
Gouripur(Mymensingh) Correspondent reports: The Christian community in Gouripur upazila of Mymensingh district on Wednesday celebrated Christmas, the birthday of Jesus Christ with much enthusiasm, festivity and religious fervour.
Also called ‘Boro Din’ in Bangla, Christmas is the biggest Christian festival . According to Christian belief, Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus Christ in the city of Bethlehem on this day.
The biggest gathering was held at Gouripur Baptist Church at West Bhaluka in the town of Gouripur where many Christians including women and children assembled to celebrate the birthday of Jesus and participated in special prayers. The church was decorated with colourful buntings and balloons and wore a festive look. Similar prayers were held at other seven churches in this upazila. Illuminated Christmas trees were placed with a star standing right on top. Special dishes were prepared in the families of members of the community and the children sought blessings from the elders.
District President of North Mymensingh Unit of Bangladesh Baptist Church, Huebard Chakrabarthy, inhabitant of Gouripur upazila said to the New Nation, Apart from organizing special prayers in churches, cutting cakes, carol singing, exchange of pleasantries and decoration of X-mas trees were the other main features of the day.
Ishwardi Correspondent reports: The Christmas Day was observed in Ishwardi and Pakshi on Wednesday . Seven churches, including the Masai Telugu Church at Pakshi and Halleluia Telugu Church at f Ishwardi organised on Wednesday. The programmes including cutting of cakes, serving birthday songs, prayers and banquet feasts. Pastor M Daniel, President of the church Dukhiram Sarkar and General Secretary Raju Sarkar led the implementation of all the programmes.
Staff Reporter from Kishoreganj says: The Christian community is celebrated the Christmas Day in Kishoreganj on Wednesday commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ.
Decoration of Christmas Trees with colourful lights, special prayers and distributing of gifts among the children and exchange of pleasantries are the main features of the day’s festivities.
Baptist Missonary School arranged a discussion meeting at its premises on Wednesday morning.
S P Md. Mashrukur Rahman Khaled BPM (Bar) attended as chief guest while Baptist School Managing Committee Chairman Adv Rakhal Biswas chaired the programme.
