UNB, Dhaka :
Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen on Tuesday said writing history is a tough job as the writers need wisdom and hard labour.
“It’s not easy job to write history as the writers need wisdom, intelligence, hard labour and time. The writers need to search facts, research works, books and materials for writing a proper history,” he said.
Amartya Sen was speaking as the chief guest at a launching ceremony of two books on the history of Bikrampur and Manikganj in the city.
Md Azharul Islam authored the books titled ‘Manikganjer Shato Manik’ and ‘Bikrampur: Itihas and Bakititta’ at the National Museum. Finance Minister AMA Muhith presided over the function. Amartya Sen said his father’s ancestral house is in Bikrampur, while his maternal grandfather’s house is in Manikganj.
“It’s a matter of discussion whether both father’s house and maternal grandfather’s house should be treated as ancestral lands equally in terms
of gender equity, he said adding, “The question can be raised if father’s house and maternal grandfather’s house should be treated equally.”
“It’s essential for us to know the histories of various parts of our country – the histories of Bangladesh, West Bengal, undivided Bangla, and undivided Indian subcontinent,” he said.
Thinking of knowing history about various regions will not be complete until the differences and dissimilarities are not addressed in the history, Dr Amartya Sen continued.
