A writ petition was filed on Thursday with the High Court seeking its directive on the authorities concerned to establish an information cell and to appoint an information officer for furnishing necessary information to the public and media.
Supreme Court lawyer Mohammad Shishir Manir submitted the petition as a public interest litigation to the HC saying that there is a provision under the Right to Information Act, 2009 for setting up an information cell and appointment of an information officer at all the public and autonomous institutions.
But, there is no information cell or information officer at the Supreme Court, though it is a constitutional institution, he said in the petition.
Citing the petition, Shishir Manir also said not establishing
information cell and not appointing information officer at the Supreme Court is a violation of the Right to Information Act and Article 39 of the Constitution, which states for free flow of information and freedom of press.
“I have sought some information from the Supreme Court registrar general’s office about the death sentence around six months ago. But, the office is yet to provide any information to me for which I submitted the writ petition seeking necessary directives,” he said.
Registrar general of the Supreme Court, registrars of the Appellate and High Court divisions of the SC have been made respondents in the writ petition.
Shishir Manir also said he will move the writ petition before the HC bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Khizir Hayat next week.
