A Supreme Court lawyer on Sunday filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking its directives upon the government to compensate Tk 30 lakh to each of the families of the victims who died and suffered injuries in Chawkbazar fire.
Advocate Eunus Ali Akond filed the petition also seeking HC order upon the government to form a judicial inquiry commission to find out the cause behind the fire at Chawkbazar in old Dhaka and to identify those responsible for the fire and take punitive action against them.
In the petition, he prayed to the High
Court to ask the government to relocate the chemical warehouses outside Dhaka and to demolish the unauthorised building.
In the writ petition, Eunus Ali Akond prayed to the High Court to issue a rule asking the government to explain as to why its inaction to relocate the chemical godowns from Dhaka after 2010 Nimtoli fire incident should not be declared illegal.
Citing from the petition, Eunus told that the government failed to ensure people’s right to shelter and live in security in Chawkbazar area. The High Court may hold hearing on the petition today (Monday), he said.
A devastating fire broke out at Old Dhaka’s Chawkbazar area around 10:30 pm on February 20, leaving at least 67 people dead at the spot.
The victims are mostly pedestrians, people travelling on rickshaws and cars, residents of the buildings as well as owners and staffers of the shops and warehouses at the buildings.
The Chawkbazar fire, which sparked from a chemical warehouse, is the second deadliest chemical-fuelled fire in the country after the 2010 Nimtoli incident.
