Staff Reporter :
A writ petition was filed with the High Court (HC) on Monday seeking a stay on the Narayanganj Zila Parishad polls to be held on December 28.
In his petition, Md Shahjalal, an inhabitant of Araihazar Upazila in Narayanganj district, also sought a stay on the effectiveness of the existing voter-list meant for the Zila Parishad election.
The present Zila Parishad voter-list has the names of former City Mayor and the councillors, many of them may not be able to win in the city corporation election, meaning that they will not be entitled to cast votes in the Zila Parishad polls.
According to the relevant provision of the law, the Mayor and Councillors of the Narayanganj City Corporation, who will be elected in the election to be held on December 22, will be included in the voter-list, petitioner’s lawyer Eunus Ali Akond said.
The existing voter-list for Narayanganj Zila Parishad election is faulty, he added.
The HC is likely to hear the petition today, he said.
