Writ filed seeking arrest of Tonu’s killers

Staff Reporter :A writ petition was filed with the High Court (HC) on Sunday seeking its directive on the government to arrest the killers of Sohagi Jahan Tonu within 24 hours. Eunus Ali Akond, a Supreme Court (SC) lawyer, moved to the HC with the writ petition.The petitioner sought HC’s order on the government to arrest the culprits and form a judicial probe body to investigate the murder incident.Seven government officials, including the cabinet secretary, the home secretary, the inspector general of police and the area commander of Comilla Mainamati Cantonment, have been made respondents to the writ.An HC bench comprising Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice AKM Shahidul Haq may take the petition for hearing today (Monday), said the petitioner.Sohagi Jahan Tanu, 19, a second year student of History Department of Comilla Victoria College and member of the college’s theatre, was found dead in a bush beside a culvert inside the Comilla Cantonment area on March 20 night. Her head was smashed, and she had allegedly been raped.The victim’s father Year Hossain, an office assistant of Moinamoti Cantonment Board, filed a case against some unidentified people with Kotwali Police Station on March 21.The killing of Tanu sparked protests across the country and demonstrations are underway demanding abrupt arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible.
