Staff Reporter :
A writ petition was filed with the High Court on Wednesday challenging the legality of the appointment of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Kazi Reazul Haque.
Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Yunus Ali Akand filed the petition as per the relevant section of the High Court.
The petition is likely to be heard by a bench of the High Court on Sunday.
In the petition, Yunus Ali said, no member of NHRC, according to the Section 2(H) of Human Rights Commission Act, will be allowed to serve the Commission more than twice. But Kazi Reazul Haque who was appointed its Chairman served as its members for two terms.
Besides, as per Section 6 (2) of the Act, the NHRC Chairman has to be a legal expert. But the present chairman is not a legal expert either, he said adding that the appointment was given violating the Human Rights Commission Act. ‘So, he cannot hold the post,’ said the SC lawyer.
All concerned, including the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad and the NHRC Chairman, have been made respondents to the writ petition.
On August 2, former secretary Kazi Reazul Haque was appointed NHRC Chairman for three years.
