A writ petit-ion was filed with the High Court on Sunday seeking cancellation of BNP mayoral candidate Tabith Awal’s candidacy for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) on charge of concealing wealth information in his affidavit filed with the returning officer.
Former judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik filed
the petition with the High Court. The petition may be heard today (Monday) in the High Court bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam.
Earlier on January 23, Justice Shamsuddin served a legal notice to the Election Commission demanding justice over concealing wealth information in affidavit filed by Tabith Awal with the returning officer.
As the Election Commission failed to take any initiative against the candidate, Justice Shamsuddin filed the writ petition.
Justice Shamsuddin alleged that Tabith Awal has violated the country’s election law by hiding his wealth information.
“Tabith Awal is one of the three shareholders of Singapore-based MFM Company with his two siblings. But he did not mention the information in his affidavit submitted to the returning officer. As a result, he could no longer be a candidate in the Dhaka North City Corporation election for concealing wealth information,” Justice Shamsuddin said.
Tabith Awal, chief election commissioner and other government bodies have been made respondents in the writ petition.
