Worried Civil Society, a platform of some eminent citizens, on Friday called for an immediate national dialogue among the concerned quarters to stop the ongoing political violence in the country.
They also urged the government to take initiative for a dialogue to crate a congenial atmosphere in the interest of peace and
prosperity and hoped that it would put an end to the ongoing political crisis in the country.
At a press conference, organised by Worried Citizens at the National Press Club in the city, a 13-member committee headed by former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) ATM Shamsul Huda, was formed in this regard.
“We will not take any initiative of our own for dialogue. If it is needed we will extend our all-out cooperation to make the initiative a success,” the former CEC told the press conference.
He urged the politicians to stop the ongoing violence first.
“Stop violence immediately. And then create a friendly atmosphere to begin the process of dialogue as it is a norm of peaceful and democratic politics,” said Shamsul Huda.
“We want peace, political stability and immediate end to the prevailing situation,” he said.
The other members of the committee are former caretaker government advisors Hafizuddin Khan, ASM Shahjahan, Jamilur Reza Chowdhury, Akbar Ali Khan, CM Shafi Sami and Rasheda K Chowdhury and Rokia Afzal Rahman, columnist Syed Abul Maksud, eminent jurist Dr. Shahdeen Malik, former BGMEA president Anwar-Ul-Alam Chowdhury Parvez, researcher Dr Ahsan H Mansur, and Sujon chief Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar.
Besides, some leading personalities in a statement on Friday also termed the ongoing violence as an evil move to thwart the trial of war criminals.
“We are urging the government to execute the verdict of the war criminals to end the present situation,” the statement said.
Signatories to the statement are: Professors Farid Uddin Ahmed, Ashraf Uddin Chowdhury, Muhammad Mahbub Ali, Abul Barakat, Shafiq Uzzaman, Hannana Begum and Abdur Sattar Mandal.
Other signatories are: Khandaker Ibrahim Khaled, Dr. Toufiq Ahmed Chowdhury, Dr. Muhammad Farasuddin, Dr Mostafa Kamal, Dr. Zayed Bakth and Dr Jamal Uddin Ahmed.
