World Mental Health Day observed at EWU

The 10 October is worldwide observed as the ‘World Mental Health Day 2018’ by the World Health Organization (WHO). According to WHO, in terms of the burden of the disease among adolescents, depression is the third leading cause and suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds. To raise awareness related to this year’s theme is “Young People and Mental Health in a Changing World”. The Department of Social Relations of East West University (EWU) organized a number of events ¾ a seminar, a poster exhibition as well as awareness campaign at EWU campus, Aftabnagar in the city on Wednesday.
Prof Dr Md. Mobarak Hossain Khan, Chairperson, Department of Social Relations and Rubayat Kabir, Senior Lecturer of the same department give presentation in the seminar. They outlined the scenario of mental health and well being of EWU students based on recent survey conducted on 670 undergraduate students from various departments. The main focus of the survey was to assess the mental state of students.
In addition, it tried to identify factors affecting levels of depression in them. They also highlighted the mechanisms to cope with stress and talked about where to receive help in the case of mental health related issues. Prof Dr Fakrul Alam, Pro Vice Chancellor, EWU was the Chief Guest of the Seminar. And Dr Rafiqul Huda Chaudhury, Member, Board of Trustees of EWU and Honorary Professor of the Department of Social Relations, presided over the event.
