The world is on the brink of the ‘last war in the history of mankind’ following the Salisbury nerve attack, a former Russian general has warned.
Evgeny Buzhinsky said tensions between Russia and the West are ‘worse than the Cold War’ and warned that ‘to corner Russia is a very dangerous thing’.
He said he had genuine concerns that current strained relations could end in armed conflict, after 150 Russian diplomats were expelled from countries across the world in the fallout of the poisoning of ex-Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia.
Yesterday, scientists at Porton Down – the Ministry of Defence research centre testing the nerve agent used in the attack on the Skripals – said they have not verified where the Novichok came from, despite Britain and its allies pointing the finger at Russia.
Gary Aitkenhead, chief executive of the Government’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory based near Salisbury, said his scientists had identified the poison as a military-grade Novichok nerve agent which could probably be deployed only by a nation-state.
