World Environment Day observed

World Environment Day-2015 was observed here as elsewhere in the country on Friday with a call to take up the issue of climate change seriously to protect nature and the planet.
This year’s theme of the day was: Seven Billions Dreams, One Planet, Consume with Care. Marking the day, a discussion meeting organized by district administration was held at the auditorium of Zilla Shilpakala Academy (ZSA) of the town here in the morning around 10 am.
Deputy Director (DD) of local government section of district collectorate building M. Moklesur Rahman addressed the function as the chief guest and mayor of Gaibandha Municipality M. Shamsul Alam was present as the special guest.
With senior assistant commissioner M. Sajebur Rahman in the chair, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by programme manager of SKS Foundation Modasseruzzaman Milu and journalist S Sarker, M. Shahiduzzaman and Hedayetul Islam Babu.
Bangladesh is among the most vulnerable countries to climate change and sea level rise was a threat to the environment of the world and its bio-diversity; they said adding that numerous species had already become extinct and many more were currently on the endangered list.
The overall rainfall had been decreasing over the years due to greenhouse effect, leading to disastrous climate change resulting drying of rivers, canals and other water bodies, they added.
DD M. Moklesur Rahman urged all concerned, particularly the young generations, to plant more tress to prevent environmental degradation and take pragmatic measures to save the environment from all sorts of pollutions.
Earlier, a big rally led by DD M. Moklesur Rahman was brought out from Independence Square and ended in front of the ZSA after parading main roads of the town.
Sylhet Correspondent adds: The World Environment Day was observed in the Sylhet district on Friday.
Sylhet district administration chalked out an elaborate programme in observance of the day. As a part of the programme, a colorful rally was brought out in the district town here in the morning. A large number of local people including students, NGO workers, officials and youths joined the rally.
Divisional commissioner sylhet jamal uddin Ahmed formally inaugurated the rally.
A discussion meeting was held at Zila parished hall Room. Divisional commissioner sylhet jamal uddin Ahmed addressed the meeting as chief guest while Divisional Director Sala Uddin Chy was in the chair.
The meeting was addressed, among others, by police commissioner Kamrul Ahsan, DC Shohidul Islam, Motiur Rahman. The speakers underlined the need for creating mass awareness about the necessity of keeping the balance of environment by reducing “carbon emission” as well as discouraging ” deforestation programmes” across the world and removing all the barriers on the way to save the nature and biodiversity.
