Staff Reporter :
The ‘World Autism Awareness Day’ will be observed today (Thursday) across the country as elsewhere around the globe. The theme of this day this year is ‘Employment: The Autism Advantage’.
On this occasion, Autism Welfare Foundation (AWF) will organize various programs .The programs include various workshops for parents, handicraft exhibitions, seminars on healthcare and many more.
Autism (sometimes called “classical autism”) is the most common condition in a group of developmental disorders known as the autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Autism is characterized by impaired social interactions,
problems with verbal and non verbal communications, and unusual, repetitive, or severely limited activities and interests.
Experts estimate that three to six children out of every 1,000 may have autism. This disorder is four times greater in males than in females. ASD can be associated with intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention and physical health issues such as a sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances. Some persons with ASD excel in visual skills, music, math and art.
The United Nations General Assembly agreed to declare April 2 as ‘World Autism Awareness Day’ to highlight the importance of this day in improving the quality of life of children and adults affected by autism. The eighth annual World Autism Awareness Day is April 2, 2015. Every year, autism organizations around the world observe the day with unique fundraising and awareness-raising events.
Their target is to overcome the negative image about autistic people and to make society aware about helping them to lead more meaningful lives. The decision to observe this day was taken on December 18, 2007 in a general meeting of the United Nations.
It is estimated that more than 80pc of adults with autism are unemployed. We need to overcome certain barriers to bring to the frontline the true potential of autistic people, these are : a shortage of vocational training, inadequate support with job placement, and pervasive discrimination.
A special program will be telecast by ATN Bangla to mark the ‘World Autism Awareness Day’ in Bangladesh. Among the principal participants in the program is Head of ‘Bangladesh National Advisor’s Committee on Autism’, Saima Wazed. She is the pioneer to develop autism awareness in Bangladesh.
