Bangladesh Water Development Board in association with Institute of Water Modeling, DHI and Deltares organized an Inception Workshop on Long Term Monitoring, Research and Analysis of Bangladesh Coastal Zone (Sustainable Polders Adapted to Coastal Dynamics) on Wednesday at CIRDAP International Conference Centre Dhaka.
Kabir Bin Anwar, Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources graced the occasion as the Chief Guest while Prof. Dr. Ainun NIshat, Vice Chancellor, BRAC University and Engr Md Mahfuzur Rahman, Mahmudul Islam, Additional Secretary (Admin), Ministry of Water Resources were present in the workshop as a guest.
Director General, Bangladesh Water Development Board were present as Special Guests. Engr. Khandakar Khalekuzzaman, ADG (Western Region), BWDB presided over the inaugural session of the workshop while Engr. KM Anwar Hossain, ADG (Planning), BWDB chair the Technical Session. Md. Habibur Rahman, Chief Engineer & Project Director, Coastal Embankment Improvement Project, Phase-1 (CEIP-1), BWDB welcomed the guests and audience in the workshop.
Dr. Ranjit Galap patti, Team Leader, JV DHI-Deltares to deliver his presentation on overview of the study “Long Term Monitoring, Research and Analysis of Bangladesh Coastal Zone. Jan Adriaan Roelvink, Head, Chairgroup Coastal Systems & Engineering and Port Development, IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, Deltares delivered a presentation on Long Term Morphological Process in the Coastal Zone of Bangladesh.
Dr. Irina Overeem, Macro-Scale Delta Morphologist and Dr. Steve Goodbred, Large Scale Delta Morphologist delivered a presentation on Land Subsidence in the coastal zone of Bangladesh- Present and Future.
The audience actively participated in the lively open discussion session of the workshop. Guests from various government and non-government agencies, water and coastal experts and decision makers attended the workshop.
Analysing the present drawbacks of the existing polders, how the coastal polders can be managed in a more sustainable way for long term was discussed in the workshop.
