Workers Party (WP) of Bangladesh on Saturday rejected BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s proposal on the formation of Election Commission (EC).
A meeting of WP politburo rejected her proposal, saying that it was ‘not acceptable.’
WP President Rashed Khan Menon presided over the meeting at party’s central office in the city, said a release.
The meeting observed that Khaleda Zia’s 13-point proposal seems to be a ‘strategy paper’ of not joining the next national election.
Despite having a constitutional provision, giving the proposal of forming a search committee for constituting the EC on the basis of consensus among all parties, is a condemnable tactic to maintain bond with Jamaat-e-Islami, the WP said. The proposal of giving magistracy power to army during polls is also unwarranted, it added.
The WP condemned killing of people and arson attacks by BNP and Jamaat during the last national polls and said those parties do not have any ability to implement conspiracies to foil the next election.
The WP reiterated its proposal to empower the EC and ensure its independence.
