Leaders of the Bangladesh Road Transport Workers’ Federation on Tuesday urged the government to resume services of public transports before the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr following the health regulations.
In a joint statement by the leaders, including former shipping minister and the federation president Shajahan Khan, they said that around 50 lakh road transport workers were passing days in hardship without any earnings.
The federation also issued a press release in this regard.
The leaders said that though the ban on public transports was logical amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the authorities should consider about the earnings of transport workers.
It continued that in recent days passengers were seen travelling by auto rickshaws, cars, micro buses, and mini trucks on the highways. The passengers were travelling paying higher fare and facing risks of infection and different harassment, the statement said.
Against these backdrops the leaders urged the government to resume the public transport services allowing 50 per cent passengers against the capacity of the buses before the eid. They also urged the authorities to provide relief to the transport workers.
