The Ministry of Labour of Saudi Arabia announced on Monday that the Kingdom will start issuing visas for Bangladeshi domestic workers from April 20.
This decision is the result of a deal signed last month between the two govern
ments, said Ahmed Al-Fahaid, Deputy Labour Minister for International Affairs of Saudi Arabia. The agreement was signed in Dhaka by Al-Fahaid and Bangladesh Minister for Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment ,Khandker Mosharraf Hossain.
According to Al-Fahaid , ‘It was a comprehensive deal that protected the rights of employers and workers. The Bangladeshi workers who will get the visas must be in good health, have no criminal convictions and training in their professions. They must also be aware of the Kingdom’s religious and cultural environment and labour regulations.’
In an earlier statement, Khandker Mosharraf Hossain said that a data center in Bangladesh had registered more than two million workers for foreign employment. They are trained workers including engineers, nurses and 500,000 maids. Dhaka has also set up 64 centers to train workers. Labour Counsellor at the Bangladesh Embassy in Saudi Arabia Mohamed Sarwar Alam, told the Arab News recently that it was good news for his country.
In January this year, Labour Minister of Saudi Adel Fakeih said the Kingdom wanted to hire trained workers. He welcomed the transparent vetting process instituted by all parties involved in the recruitment process.
