Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury urged all to work together to build a discriminate free society by eliminating violence against women.
“It is very much urgent to increase the links of women in all areas of mainstream development of the society,” she told a programme held on Friday at the north plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Switzerland Embassy in Bangladesh organised the programme.
Earlier, the Speaker inaugurated a human chain by releasing balloons to this end.
Terming Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as the role model of women development, Dr Shirin said, “We have to bring changes in the society by eradicating violence against women. It is possible through creating conducive atmosphere in work places, making well arrangement of travel system and changing mindset on women.”
Speaking on the occasion, Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni said people of all stages should work to raise awareness to stop violence against women.
State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Fazilatunnesa Indira said that the present government is pledge-bound to prevent violence against women.
Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip Nur-E Alam Chowdhury, Whip Iqbalur Rahim, Meher Afroz Chumki, MP, Aroma Dutta, MP, Swiss Ambassador Nathalie Chuard and UNDP Country Resident Representative Sudipta Mukherjee also spoke.
Former Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, MP, Raushan Ara Mannan, MP, Khodeza Nasrin Akhter, MP, Basonti Chakma, MP, and Umme Fatema Nazma Begum, MP, among others, attended the function.
