Three hostels which were built for primary school students in Panchhari, Manikchhari and Laxmichhari upazilas of Khagrachhari district have not been started in eight years of their construction.
No manpower has been appointed till now, Furniture and other essential equipment required for the hostel have been ruined. The dormitory of Panchhari has been cracked and abandoned with risky condition.
Considering the primary school dropout students and children in remote areas, these three hostels were constructed in 2011 at the cost of more than Taka 5 crore. On March 31 of that year, the Primary and Mass Education Minister Afsarul Amin inaugurated the hostel building.
There have accommodation for 80 students in each hostel. The dormitory has rest, study, eating and playing facilities. Along with electricity, solar power has also been kept. However, nothing is useful.
Bipasha Sarker, Headmistress of Panchhari Bazar Model Government Primary School said, “More than once, we submitted written appeal to the higher authority but we did not get any response. Lastly, I applied in December last year”. He added, “It is very important to start the hostel, which reduces the drop rate of primary students and children in remote areas also get the opportunity to study.”
Panchhari Sadar Union Council Chairman Nazir Mahmood said, despite the year have passed, it is very sad to not start the hostels.
In the meantime, the hostel of Panchchhari upazila has become an abandoned building”.
He also said, “It has become risky to crack in different places of the building”.
Khagrachhari District Primary Education Officer Fatema Meher Yasmin said, “Due to not being employed manpower, the hostels can not be started”.
“Earlier this month, I applied to the Department of Primary Education on the overall topic. Hopefully soon the manpower will be appointed to run the hostels”, she added.
