BSS, Dhaka :
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday called upon the private sector to work for increasing buying capacity of the people side by side with boosting productivity in mills and factories and work efficiency of the people.
“Boosting productivity in mills and factories and work efficiency of the people are not enough. You will also have to give attention to increase the purchasing capacity of the people to take the country forward further,” she said.
The Prime Minister expressed this view when the Bankers Association of Bangladesh (BAB) handed over cheques for the donation to the Prime Minister for her Relief and Welfare Fund at her official Ganobhaban residence here yesterday evening.
PM’s Deputy Press Secretary Ashraful Alam Khokan said the chairmen and managing directors of 34 private banks under the BAB handed over cheques for donation to the Prime Minister.
Sheikh Hasina also urged the private sector to work together with the government for further advancement of the country. “If the private sector works together with the government, there would be no difficulties for us in taking the country ahead,” she said.
Receiving the cheques, the Prime Minister said the donation for her Relief and Welfare Fund is spent for the assistance of the distressed and poor people. In this connection, Sheikh Hasina noted that financial assistance from the fund has been provided to the Rana Plaza and Tazreen Garment Factory victims as well as others who became the victims of BNP-Jamaat terrorist acts.
The Prime Minister also urged the private sector to spend more in their corporate social responsibility programme, saying that underprivileged segment of the society would ultimately be benefitted from it.
Sheikh Hasina requested all to be more sympathetic towards the people with disability, saying that her government would appoint area-based psychologists for counseling of the children with disabilities.
While talking about her Education Assistance Trust Fund that was set up with a seed money of Taka 1000 crore, the Prime Minister noted that stipends are being provided to the huge number of students across the country from the fund.
She also urged the well-off people of the society including the private sector to contribute to the mid-day meal programme of the government, saying that it would help reduce the dropout of the students.
The Prime Minister also mentioned the country’s “century” in setting up power plants, saying that nobody imagined that Bangladesh would achieve such progress in this short period.
The BAB leaders thanked the Prime Minister for withdrawal of a total of five percent corporate tax from the banks.
They earlier congratulated Prime Minister by presenting flower bouquets for receiving the world’s highest environmental accolade-the Champions of the Earth Award-and “ICT Sustainable Development Award”. On the occasion, the BAB leaders cut a cake.
