The wooden bridge over the Bishkhali canal bordering the two unions of Morelganj in Bagerhat district, the only means of communication for the people of three villages, has been lying in an awful state for years, causing immense sufferings to local residents.
On spot visit, it was seen that Kachubunia village in the middle of Ramchandrapur union is on the other side of the border of Daibajnahati union of the upazila. There is Shakhari Kathi, the only means of daily movement of six-seven thousand people of three villages of Khalkulia two unions, a broken wooden bridge. The dilapidated bridge has been standing for last 10 years. People from three villages, including children and students, are constantly risking their lives.
The bridge has to be crossed at Daibajnahati, Selimabad College, two secondary schools, two primary schools and other rural markets. Due to the fact that this broken bridge is on the border of the two unions, the people are in a tug of war between the UP chairmen. Although the Union Parishad is allocated for the development of rural infrastructure every year, the two UP chairmen have not paid attention to the reconstruction of the bridge.
There is always a risk to cross from this bridge. In the meantime, at least 10-15 people have been injured after falling from the bridge during the monsoon season. Where is the end of this misery? Mannu Sheikh, a local resident, said the concerned department measured the bridge to initiate a project. But there is no further progress on the work. Locals demanded the concerned senior officials to rebuild the dilapidated bridge.
In this regard, Ramchandrapur UP Chairman Abdul Alim said the bridge was renovated last year with a small allocation from the council after he was elected. However, a proposal has been sent from the PIO office to renovate the bridge as per the instructions of the former MP. This issue has been raised more than once in the monthly coordination meeting.
