Speakers at a roundtable underlined the need for financial independence and proper education of women for their participation in politics.
The two important tools, they said, can give women access to public life and position as decision-makers.
The USAID, Democracy International, UKAID and UNDP jointly organised the roundtable on ‘Women’s Political Leadership in Bangladesh’ at a hotel in Banani in the city.
Speaking at the programme, State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroze Chumki said, “Awareness raising and education are essential to establish women’s political empowerment at all levels from the grassroots, civil society organisations to state institutions.”
British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Robert W Gibson said, “UK government will continue to work for strengthening women’s political leadership at the grassroots level.” Participants in the meeting also placed emphasis on encouraging and engaging women in the decision-making process within political and democratic ways.
