Speakers at a seminar yesterday said women’s empowerment is an immense achievement in the socio-economic index as their contributions are visible in the country’s important sectors.
They said men raised the issue of women’s emancipation first and men had a prominent role in women’s empowerment and advancement while along with their male counterparts, a significant number of women have been showing their merit and skill in important and responsible posts of the state.
The speakers said this while taking part in a seminar at the Conference Room of the National Economic Council (NEC) at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the city.
The Economic Relations Division (ERD) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) jointly organised the seminar in observance of the International Women’s Day.
State Minister for Public Administration Ismat Ara Sadique, MP, attended the seminar as the chief guest with ERD senior secretary Mohammad Mezbah Uddin in the chair.
ERD joint secretary Sultana Afrose, BIDS director (Research) Rushidan Islam, UNFPA representative Matavel Piccin of Argentina, FAO representative David W Doolan, eminent actress Shami Kaiser, secretaries of different ministries and senior officials of the government and non-government development agencies were present.
Participants in the seminar were of the opinion that participation of women in different sectors including agriculture has increased and if the gap and disparity between women and their male counterpart could be reduced, country’s agriculture sector could play a dominant role in food output.
Paying her respect and gratitude to those women personalities including Begum Rokeya Shakhawat Hossain for their contributions in women’s emancipation, Ismat Ara Sadique said women of the country have a track record of their merit and skill in different sectors as the present government has attached priority in their empowerment and development.
The state minister said the government has undertaken various projects and implementing them in the education sector for women’s empowerment as only education can create a smooth path for a congenial atmosphere for the womenfolk.
