BSS, Dhaka :International Women’s Day will be observed today across the country as elsewhere in the world to renew a fresh vow for establishing the rights of women at every sphere of life in society.The government of Bangladesh has selected this year’s theme of the day ‘Empowerment of women-development of humanity” In Bangladesh, this year the day will be observed for raising demand to create congenial condition for women’s safe mobility as well as for establishing their equal rights, and opportunity at all tiers and levels of the society.Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to attend the function to be held at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre at 10.30 am today on the occasion of International Women’s Day-2-15. Different organizations in the country have chalked out elaborate programmes on this occasion.The United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day on 8 March in 1975. Since then many countries around the world celebrate the international Women’s Day.It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. It is an occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments, and more importantly, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women.Events take place not just on this day but throughout March to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women.On the eve of the day, President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in separate messages, urged has urged all to work together for ensuring women empowerment, their equal rights and opportunity.The President said the forward march of the womenfolk of Bangladesh is worldwide recognized. Women side by side with men are taking the country on the way to prosperity by playing role in family, society, state and economic life, he added.Although unprecedented development has taken place in empowering women after the country’s independence, there is still scope to work on ensuring their equal rights as well as the human rights, said the President.The Prime Minister said her government has been attaching priority to empowering of the womenfolk, gender equality and poverty alleviation in the national development plans and different countries and international organizations, including the United Nations, praised the government’s role for women development.”We’ve formulated the National Women Development Policy 2011 and necessary laws and policies have also been made to empower women and prevent violence against them,” she added.
