Women represents 10 percent of total workforce in information and communication technology (ICT) sector in the country, according to a study of a local research organisation Preneur Lab.
The research study was unveiled at a discussion meeting on ‘Girls in ICT day’ held at North South University in the capital on Thursday.
Development agency Plan International Bangladesh and Preneur Lab, in association with Brac, Oxfam, Save the Children and Amra Technologis oranized the five-day long programme of Girls in ICT day.
As a day of United Nations, Girls in ICT campaign has been celebrating across 193 countries since 2010.
The research study recommended coordinated efforts of the ICT division of the government, BASIS and other stack holders would increase the participation of women in ICT sector.
Addressing the event, Mustafa Jabbar said girls in Bangladesh were diverted from their vision at job market despite they completed graduation in computer science as only 7.0 percent of CSE-grader girls keep themselves attached with tech organizations.
BASIS president also said that the government and private sector should take effective initiatives to promote ICT among women.
Save the Children Country Director Mark Pierce said observing this day would help to reduce the growing gender digital divide and encourage girls to pursue studies and careers in information and communication technologies and build a better Bangladesh.
Aamra Technologies Chief Operating Officer Sharful Alam, BRAC Head of ICT KAM Morshed, Specialist SM Kawser Been Amir, PIB Head of ICT Rabiul Islam and Preneur Lab CEO Arif Neami spoke, among others, while PIB Country Director Orla Murphy gave welcome note on the occasion.
