The two-day Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament will be held in Abu Dhabi of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on December 12-13 next with the theme ‘United for Shaping the Future’.
Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and UAE Federal National Council will jointly organise the unique gathering of 50 female Speakers of Parliament, which will focus on framing actionable recommendations around key issues, including gender inequality, economic disparities and intolerance. IPU President Saber Hossain Chowdhury and UAE Federal National Council Speaker Dr Amal Al Qubaisi jointly came up with the announcement at the 135th IPU Assembly held in Geneva of Switzerland on Tuesday, said a Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat release on Wednesday. The two-day summit will take place at the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi under the patronage of Supreme President of the Family Development Foundation and Council for Motherhood and Childhood Sheikh Fatima Bint Mubarak.
Speaking about the IPU’s agenda for the summit, IPU President Saber Chowdhury said, “We’re delighted that the female Speakers will meet this year in the UAE at the invitation of Speaker Al Qubaisi, the first woman to preside over the FNC and the first female Speaker of a national parliament in the Arab world.”
Speaker Dr Amal Al Qubaisi said, “The Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament is a platform to discuss the mega trends that are transforming our economies and societies, debate the grand challenges as well as opportunities they pose and determine the best course of action.
As leaders we have to think bigger, we have to think better, we have to think ahead. Through the Summit, it is our aim to create a foundation on which we can build a sustainable vision of the future that is inclusive, representative and realistic.”
