Over 500 women entrepreneurs drawn from far and wide of Bangladesh have demanded an exclusive special economic zone (SEZ) for themselves.
They came up with the demand at a conference of women entrepreneurs at Ruposhi Bangla Hotel in Dhaka on Thursday.
Bangladesh Bank Governor Atiur Rahman inaugurated the conference.
The Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) President Rokia Afzal Rahman highlighted the necessity of the SEZ for women entrepreneurs.
She said: “Women entrepreneurs are making new products taking loan with low interest. Hundred percent loans are recovered only from businesswomen. Massive changes can be brought to the economy through women entrepreneurs. We’re seeing many such examples.”
After the inaugural session, Delwara Begum from Jamalpur told bdnews24.com said establishment of a special economic zone could help them raise their production capacity.
“We can establish heavy industries besides small and medium units. It would be easy to raise quality and promote diversity of products.”
Many other female entrepreneurs like Begum also called for institution of an exclusive SEZ for them.
Echoing them, Governor Rahman said he would take the matter up with the top level of the government.
