Women Empowerment to stop gender violence emphasised

A 16-day activism campaign under the theme “Orange the World: End woman against women now” launched on Thursday marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The programme will continue till International Human Rights Day on December 10.
In Kishoreganj, POPI an NGO, Mohila Parishad Government agencies and human rights organisations join began the campaign to set up initiatives to end violence against women and girls.
POPI -Ecatto project, organised a colourful rally was brought out in the town on Thursday morning marking the day. POPI also distributing umbrellas among the 300 school -College students at Syed Nazrul Islam Square (Param Chatro). The programme presided over POPI –Eacatto project manager Faridul Alam. It was addresses among others by Senior Journalist Alam Sarowar Tito, District Press Club President Mostafa Kamal and Mohila Awami League district secretary Bilkis Begum.
Bangladesh Mohila Parishad arranged a discussion meeting at its office room on Thursday noon. District Committee President advocate Maya Bhowmick presided over.
 
Mohila Parishad in Kishoreganj demanded the government take seriously its obligations under international law, its own constitution, and domestic laws to prevent, investigate, prosecute and punish those responsible for violence against girls and women and assist survivors.
Alam Sarowar Tito , a Senior Journalist, said women were always considered the weakest part of society, and a lack of self-control and poor attitude from men makes women more prone to violence.

The child marriage has also seen spike in Bangladesh during the COVID-19 pandemic.,he added.
“Violence begins from home. The International Day for Ending Violence against Women is an important day globally, but in Bangladesh it is limited with few initiatives by non-government actors. The government and rights defenders should prioritize the day to raise awareness and end violence against women,”
