Women earn less: Survey

The country’s wage scenario has not improved much as the average monthly wage has increased only by Tk 49 in the last two years, shows an official survey.
At present, labourers earn Tk 11,542 on an average per month, which was Tk 11,493 in the year 2013, according to the latest quarterly (July to September 2015) Labour Force Survey of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).
Although the average monthly wage for men has increased, it has gone down for women. Women now earn Tk 10,817 per month, Tk 319 less than the previous figure, whereas men earn Tk 11,733, which records a Tk 112 increase.
At present, there are 23.1 million wage earners in the country, which was 23.9 million two years back.
However, there are 61.4 million people in the country’s labour force. Among them, 58.7 million are involved with production this way or that. Only people working for at least an hour every week are considered wage earners. Others in the labour force are unemployed.
Around 37 per cent or 8.7 million of the wage earners get paid on a daily basis while almost half of the wage earners, around 11.7 million, get paid on a monthly basis.
According to the labour force survey 2013 of BBS, the average monthly wage of a female worker then was Tk 11,136. Rather the wage being increased in next two years, it went down to Tk 10,817.
On the other hand, a man gets Tk 11,733 as monthly wage on average. Two years ago it was Tk 11,621.
