A woman gave birth to five babies in Chandpur’s Kachua upazila but all of them died within three hours on Saturday evening.
Three babies died within one hour of being born and two died after being taken home from Kachua Tower Hospital and Digital Diagnostic Center in the upazila, a correspondent reports from Chandpur.
Condition of the woman, Marufa Begum, is stable now.
Shahjalal, assistant manager of the hospital, said that 25-year-old Marufa gave birth prematurely to four baby boys and one girl. She was admitted to the hospital from Andirpar yesterday evening, he added.
The hospital authorities tried to keep the babies alive with oxygen but within an hour, three of them died, the official said.
The hospital authorities later advised Marufa’s family to take the two babies who were alive to another hospital but they went home in Andirpar village. Later at night, the two babies died at home.
“My wife gave birth for the first time after six years of our marriage,” said Marufa’s husband Md Yusuf, an expat worker who returned from Dubai.
“I did not take my wife to a better hospital as we don’t have enough money,” he said.
Dr Synthia Saha, a doctor of the hospital, said, “We have been giving medical treatment to the woman from the beginning. We came to know that she was carrying five babies through ultrasonogram test. But four months before the expected delivery date, Marufa was admitted here on Saturday with labour pain.”
“She gave birth to the babies normally and we instantly arranged oxygen for them. But as there was no other arrangement, three of them died at the hospital. So, we advised them to go elsewhere for treatment of the other babies,” Dr Synthia added.
