A woman and her daughter have allegedly been tied to a tree and tortured brutally by money lenders in Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur district for failing to pay loan interest.
Police have rescued the victims-Momtaz Begum,30, the widow of late Abdur Rashid, and her daughter Mahbuba Akhter Jhuma,16, from Sirajpur area after incident on Thursday.
Momtaz Begum filed a complaint with Kaliakoir Police Station on Thursday afternoon accusing eight persons, reports news agencies.
Confirming the matter, Kaliakair police OC Monowar Hossain Chowdhury told media yesterday that one Sabuj was arrested over the incident.
Police and locals said Momtaz’s husband Abdur Rashid died five years ago. Since then she has been working at a readymade garment factory to earn her livelihood and provide her school-going daughter.
In the mean time, Being deceived by a gang, Momtaz borrowed Tk 3 lakh from some people in the area including Gafur and Monir Hossain. Two months after borrowing the money, the money lenders were threatening her to
repay the money.
Later, in an arbitration on February 1, local leaders gave her one month time to repay the money.
“But, before the time was up, Abdul Gafur, Monir Hossain and their families gheraoed my house at 10.30am on Thursday.
Later, they tied me to a tree and tortured. As Jhuma went to rescue me, she also faced the same fate,” Momtaz narrated the agoney.
No one came to rescue the mother and daughter during the hour-long torture, said locals.
Later, Momtaz’s sister Mehrin Sultana informed police through National Emergency Service 999.
Sensing police presence, the accused fled the scene and the victims were rescued.
Meanwhile, accused Abdul Gafur denied the allegation and said they only put pressure on the woman for paying loan money.
“None was tied up or tortured. The allegation was false,” he said.
Fulbaria Union Council Member Ibrahim Sikder said he himself saw the torture when he went to the spot after hearing about the incident.
Later, they were rescued, he added.
OC Monowar Hossain said being informed, police have been sent instantly.
Legal action would be taken after investigation he added.
