AP, London :
Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad took all 10 wickets to give England a 143-run victory over Ireland at Lord’s on Friday in the first test match between the teams.
Ireland, chasing 182 to complete a massive upset at the home of cricket in only its third test match, was out for 38 in the final innings.
Woakes finished with a career-best six wickets for 17 runs and Broad had four wickets for 19 runs. England needed only 94 balls in the innings to finish the match, the second fewest in test history.
The England victory came after Ireland began the game by dismissing the host team for 85 in the first session of the match.
Ireland captain William Porterfield said his team will continue to lobby for more chances in the test format.
“We’d love to play games like this every week in front of a full house at Lord’s,” said Porterfield. “Every game we’ve played we have put ourselves to win the game and so a few more games like this will potentially put us over the line.”
England skipper Joe Root said Ireland has a new ally.
“I think they earned the right this week in terms of playing test cricket,” he said. “It was bowler friendly but they were outstanding with the ball. They put us under pressure throughout different parts of the game over two and a bit days.
“We had to scrap to get back into the match. I can see them upsetting a few big test sides in the near future, given the opportunity.”
