Witnesses complete testifying in DU student rape case

The Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 of Dhaka yesterday concluded recording depositions of the witnesses in the case filed over rape of a Dhaka University (DU) student in the capital’s Kurmitola earlier this year.
After completion of cross-examination of the Investigation Officer, Judge (in charge) Md Al Mamun of the tribunal passed the order on Thursday.
The court fixed November 12 for recording self-defence statement of the lone accused Md Majnu. He was produced in the court yesterday.
On the next date, the judge will read out the charges from statements of 20 prosecution witnesses who gave their depositions in the tribunal.
On January 5, the DU student was raped while she was walking from Kurmitola bus stop to a friend’s house near Shewra Rail Gate of the city at about 7:30pm after getting off a university bus. She was taken to a nearby solitary place.
The next day, the victim’s father filed the case with Cantonment Police Station. On January 8, Rapid Action Battalion arrested Majnu, 30, from Shewra area. He made confession in the court on January 16.
